Tips for Choosing a Web Hosting Service

Just by searching the terms “Website Hosting” in Google, you will find over 58,000,000 results. Yeah yeah, not all of them are good hosting companies or even hosting companies (they could have false keywords or teach how to host a website, etc.), but the choice of what service you will pick could impact your website in a huge way.

Free or Paid Hosting?

I can bet that you (or someone else, it doesn’t really matter) have heard of a free hosting website such as Many people chose free hosting because they aren’t willing to put out the extra $50-$75 on hosting (depending on the provider). Having paid hosting does have many advantages, however.

• Control over almost everything (depending on your hosting package)
• Gives your website a more professional feeling
• Higher up-time percentage
• Lower chance of getting your website removed

Now, you may be one of those people who aren’t looking to become huge. Free hosting may be your thing, but why waste your time on a website or blog, just to get minimal to no traffic at all? It makes absolutely no sense! Let me admit, I even used free web hosting for a short period of time, but I then realized that I was getting small amounts of traffic for large amounts of work.

Things you should look for in a hosting company

What’s the point of a website if it is always down? When searching for a hosting provider, you need to find one that’s reliable in the fact that it’s up-time percentage is high. Now, if you don’t know what up-time is, it is basically how often it is online. Do you want to be visiting a website with valuable information when the website is never up, allowing you to learn nothing? You could have the best content in the world, but if you can’t show it, you won’t gain many readers, right?

Functionality & Controls
Besides up-time (which is huge), I look for functionality and controls because I love to have as many options as possible. Many hosting companies come with items such as editors, email services, and much more. Besides the editors and other services, I prefer hosting companies that allow you to do almost anything you want without any problem. Why would I (or anyone for that matter) want to sit there and contact my hosting company and ask them fifty questions and spend an hour to do something that should be as easy as a couple of clicks? If you look at almost any decent hosting company’s control panel (I use HostGator), you will see that they have many buttons that control all different things, and best of all, all function and work correctly.

Yeah, I have said not to be short when it comes to spending money, but I do have some exceptions. I try my best to use common sense and pick the best deals. Why am I (or anyone) going to spend $100 on hosting when there is a cheaper version for almost the same features? Now obviously the saying “you get what you pay for” comes in, but only to a certain degree. Personally, I will not be spending any more than $125 on hosting any time soon. If you are beginning in website/blog design (which I am assuming you are), why spend more money than you have to? Just get what you need and then let the internet work take it’s course.

In all, you must average the price, controls & functionality, and up-time into the equation of the perfect hosting company. Of the 58,000,000 results I found on Google, any one of them could be yours, but just make sure you find reviews of them. Who knows, the hosting company you find could be the next greatest.
